Course II: Action Research: Can new (rigorous) knowledge be generated while solving a company's real problem?

The course aims to explain Action Research (action research) as a research methodology and, specifically, presents its suitability for doctoral theses in the field of business management and organisation. The course will begin by presenting the two types of research methodologies that can be put into practice in the field of business management and organisation knowledge: formal and empirical. Starting from the dominant approaches in the academic field, the following aspects will be examined in depth:

  •  Is Action Research a masquerade to dress up consultancy work as science?
  •  Is there an advance in knowledge if the results of a doctoral thesis are not relevant in practice?
  •  What is research rigour in a doctoral thesis?

  •  Review of formal and empirical research methodologies; application in doctoral theses How to choose the right methodology for my thesis? Can I choose?
  •  Action Research: myths and truths. Criticisms (reasoned and unfounded). Applications
  •  Fitting Action Research into doctoral thesis research programmes
  •  Why don't we apply Action Research? Typical problems and how to manage them.
